These documents contain correspondence, mostly on a personal level, of the President of the Jewish Community in Baghdad. Included are requests for a telephone to be installed in a school, teacher labor issues, student transfers, receipts and invoices, thank you notes and condolences to members of the Jewish Diaspora in Europe, America, and the Middle East. The documents include an excerpt from the 1945 edition of the Biographical Encyclopedia of the World, featuring the president of the Jewish community of Baghdad, Sassoon Khedouri; a license to import one Chevrolet car from the U.S.; a wedding invitation; and several business cards of foreign dignitaries.

There is correspondence from the 1930s-1940s between the Jewish Lay Council, Jewish Hospitals Committee and various school administrations. There is a printed booklet notating a teachers’ school service record from 1944. There are collections of receipts from the Administrative Committee for Iraqi Jews, the South British Insurance Company, the Rafidain Insurance Company, various local vendors and taxi services, pharmacies, utilities, as well as rosters of patient information and correspondence from the Ministry of Culture of Iranian Schools in Iraq.

There are also government announcements, lists of political appointees and retirees to various government ministries, and changes in policy at various government agencies.

These are documents from the Baghdadi Jewish community and schools. The majority of the documents are a contract agreement between the Administrative Committee for Iraqi Jews and a general contractor to build another classroom and additional storage in the Frank Iny School (1956-1957). This includes the general contract; ledgers of schedules, materials, and costs; and design plans, including front elevation, done by Saleh Joseph. One section is correspondence between the Jewish Lay Council and all Jewish schools regarding teacher certifications and curricula (1931-1933).

These are documents from the Baghdadi Jewish community and contain a general contract agreement between the Administrative Committee for Iraqi Jews and a contractor, including a schedule and cost estimates. Also included is a letter from the Baghdad district office to the Iraqi Office of Transportation and Traffic Police regarding a registration fee exemption on a vehicle for the Ḥevrah Ḳadishah (Burial Society).

These are letters between the head of the Baghdadi Jewish community, the head of the Ḥevrah Ḳadishah (Burial Society), and engineering contractors. The correspondence includes hand drawn architectural plans about an addition to a building in the Jewish cemetery using funds from the Jewish community. There are also financial ledgers recording purchases.

These are documents from the Baghdadi Jewish schools. The documents consist of individual student records including photographs, exam scores, student certifications, admissions forms, letters of recommendation, applications to foreign institution, doctor’s notes, and correspondence regarding student affairs. In addition, there are several copies of the 1960-1961 Shamash Secondary School class rosters for grade/form five.

This is correspondence between the President of the Jewish Community, the Jewish Religious Court, Iraqi government departments, and public and private employers regarding salaries, legal cases, payments, receipts and invoices.

These are documents from the Baghdadi Jewish Community. They contain correspondence regarding marriages, divorces, civil disputes; the birthday celebrations of the Iraqi king, responses to inquires about the treatment of Iraqi Jews under Iraq’s citizenship laws, the history of Jews in Iraq, and the provision of Jewish artifacts to the Iraqi Museum. There are receipts for furniture stores and other vendors, invoices; budget allocations, deficits, and planning for various community organizations and institutions; ritual slaughtering administration, names of butchers with the numbers of animals slaughtered, names of community organization members, ledgers of payments for goods or fees, building plans, provisions for school children, concerns over hospital food distribution, blanket distribution to the poor, receptions, meetings, shipment orders, import and export of goods, the care of orphans, and a census on the number of synagogues in Baghdad in 1945 (40). There are copies of a printed text titled “Appeal to Save the Children.” Letters include: the President of the Jewish Community to the Controller of Foodstuffs in Baghdad thanking the Controller for the allotment of sugar and tea for the students at the Rahel Shamoon School; addressing complaints at the Meir Elias Hospital in Baghdad; purchasing blankets for the poor via the Poor Welfare Society; sending money rather than clothes from an importer in New York City to the poor in Baghdad since clothing costs have gone up.

They contain printed booklets of school records, printed booklets for student awards ceremonies for the 1960-1961 and 1961-1962 academic years, recognizing students from Shamash Secondary and Frank Iny Schools; school regulations and requirements for certificates; curriculum; book and vocabulary lists; exams in Arabic and French; correspondence regarding communal laws; a building contract; blank student transfer, teacher personnel paperwork, and transcript templates; and a history of Iraq in French.These documents reflect the Baghdadi Jewish community's name change to the Mosaic community.
